How retailers can use marketing research

You are a retailer, probably not Wal-Mart, but with aspirations. You would like to grow your business, maybe expand your product line, but you aren’t sure if a market exists for the new products.

Maybe your sales have dropped off recently, and you’d like to know why.

Maybe you wonder if you should be advertising—advertising more, or advertising less, or on social media, or in traditional media, or maybe not at all?

Ask your customers how they feel, and reduce uncertainty.

  • Are customers aware of your brand?
  • Have customers ever purchased at your store? How often?
  • What do customers think about your store? (love it? hate it?)
  • How loyal are customers to your brand?
  • How will customers like your new products?
  • Are customers aware of your advertising efforts?
  • What adjectives do customers use to describe your brand?
  • What attitudes and beliefs do customers have about your brand?
  • How likely is the customer to purchase at your store in the next 30 days? Six months?
  • If some customers like your store, but others do not, how are the groups different? Do you need a different marketing strategy to reach different groups?
