Last week I defended my dissertation. The long (eight year) journey is finally over. Some sources say half of all Ph.D. students don’t complete their doctorates. Another source cites a 2004 study by the Chronicle of Higher Education, suggesting the attrition rate is closer to 37%. I’m sure it depends on the institution and the program. And whether one attends a traditional institution or a for-profit institution.
Some people don’t have what it takes to finish, some don’t want to go through all that it takes to finish, and then there’s the rest of us, the ones who finish.
What does one do with a Ph.D. in the new millennium?
